Have you ever met or known someone so different from yourself that you could not imagine having one single thing in common with them?
- They're upscale and you are not even on a scale
- They're uptown and you can't even find town
- They're designer suits and you're Levi and Wrangler jeans
- They're fancy desserts with funny names and you're cookies and milk
- They're box seats at the Opera and you're Redbox outside Winn Dixie
- They're a voracious reader and the last thing you read was the menu at Cracker Barrel
No matter how different we are from other people (opposite ends of the spectrum on every issue) there are some things we all hold in common. Today we're going to read about two very different people - a prostitute and a Pharisee - who had more in common than one might initially guess. What they held in common is something we all share in common.

As we look at these two very different people from very different backgrounds (opposite ends of the social and religious spectrum) we discover they shared a common need. They shared a common problem. As a matter of fact...
WE ALL SHARE A COMMON NEED/PROBLEM
As we set the scene and walk through this story I want us to start by considering two of the three main characters in this story - Simon the Pharisee and the woman.
Jesus who had been teaching in the synagogues and to the crowds was invited to come and eat at the house of a local Pharisee, Simon.
- Simon would have been considered part of the upper-class elites of his day - socially and religiously.
- He would have been well respected and well-known in his community.
It was customary for a Pharisee, a religious leader, to invite a popular or visiting preacher to come and eat in his home.
- It would be an opportunity for discussion and friendly debate.
- It was a show of hospitality and if the visiting preacher was popular/well-known it would have been ...
