1 Corinthians 1:4-9
Summary of Letter to the Corinthians
Let's go back to the first chapter to get a summary of this letter. In these verses Paul explains what the letter will be about.
1 Corinthians 1:4-9
God's grace has enriched the Corinthians and made known to them the power of Christ. God has given this church all the gifts it needs to flourish and glorify Him. God who is faithful will sustain them through their relationship with Jesus to accomplish his will.
Individuals saved by the grace of God, given gifts of the Holy Spirit for the edification and building up of His Church through Jesus Christ as they minister alongside each other as the body of Christ.
This is the foundational theme that runs throughout this letter. And throughout the letter Paul has addressed various issues, difficult issues this church faced. Issues like divorce, proper worship, sexual immorality, lawsuits among believers, divisions, marital issues, and idolatry.
These issues come about because we forget who we are in Christ. We forget about the steadfast love of Christ, we forget about the abundant and never ending, inexhaustible grace and mercy we receive from God every day. If the church is going to live out its purpose and mission then we need to remember who we are and whose we are. If we are believing the gospel and living it out every day among one another then these issues will fade away, God will be glorified and all men will know this gospel is true because of the testimony of our lives and love for others.
Jesus said it himself in John 13:34-35
''A new commandment I give you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all men will know you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.''
