I Thessalonians 4:1-8

Joseph is one of the great godly characters in the OT. He had ten older step-brothers who hated him because his father Jacob loved him more than he did them. When he was about 20 years old they sold him as a slave and in Egypt he was bought by Potiphar, the captain of Pharaoh's guard.

Potiphar's wife tempted him to lie with her, but he refused. He gave her three reasons why he would not have sex with her.

1. He did not want to betray the trust Potiphar had given him.

Genesis 39:8 My master has no concern about anything in the house, and he has put everything that he has in my charge.

2. He did not want to break her marriage vows to Potiphar.

Genesis 39:9 He has not kept back anything from me except yourself, because you are his wife.

3. He did not want to commit sin against God.

Genesis 39:9 How can I do this wickedness and sin against God?

John Gill - ''The words are emphatic in the original, 'this! this wickedness!' adultery was reckoned a great sin among all nations.'' Everyone knew adultery was wrong no matter where you lived. Marriage is the commitment between one man and one woman.

Clarence Macartney - ''An old story tells how when Joseph began to talk about God to the temptress, she flung her skirt over the bust of the god that stood in the chamber and said, 'Now, God will not see.' But Joseph answered, 'My God sees.'''

Since the ''sexual revolution'' of the 1960's we live in a society which has thrown away the values of sexual purity before marriage and faithfulness in marriage for sexual relationships without any restrictions or shame. The homosexual lifestyle which was once hidden is not only openly expressed, but publicly promoted.

God desires Christians are sexually pure in their relationships.
