I Thessalonians 2:13-19
A 47 year-old woman who had been married 27 years and had 6 children knew what love really is and once described it as: ''Love is what you have been through with somebody.''
1. When you go through the same experience you share a common bond that is why soldiers will call themselves ''a band of brothers.''
2. Those times can be good or bad, but they draw you close together because you shared the same emotions of joy or sorrow.
3. Those common experiences leave a lasting impression on you personally long after the event is over so you remember them.
Paul had a bond with the believers in Thessalonica because they had suffered for the truth of the gospel while he was there and they continued to suffer after he left.
Background Acts 17:1-9
Paul had gone to Thessalonica and for 3 weeks he had preached the gospel and many people came to accept Christ as their Savior. The Jews stirred up mob which caused a riot and charged them with treason against Caesar. The result was that Paul had to leave town. From what we read in 2:14; 3:3 is seems that believers continued to be persecuted for their faith even after Paul left town.
EMBRACED TRUTH :13
Paul began the letter by thanking God for their faith in Christ (1:3)
and now he again thanks God that they had believed the truth.
Constantly (KJB without ceasing) - Gk. continually (1:3; 5:17).
Paul does not tell us if he prayed for them everyday or each week, but the point is he faithfully and regularly prayed for them.
Received (KJB heard) - heard the gospel proclaimed by Paul.
Word of God - the truth from God proclaimed by the apostles.
Here it is the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ.
Accepted (KJB received) - Gk. welcomed it (1:6).
It was used of welcoming a guest into your home (Luke 10:10).
The gospel was proclaimed and they chose to believe it.
