Legacy of Misplaced Love
Robert Dawson
2 Timothy 4:9-10
I remember growing up Dad had this thing about wasting stuff. Mom has never been able to throw anything out while dad was looking... it could be fixed salvaged or something. She would get rid of something only to find that it was like a cat and managed to find its way back.
Needless to say Dad did not like for us to waste things. Always has and still does. Problem I had growing up was that I had a bad habit of wasting things. Can't tell you how many times I heard close the doors not cooling the neighborhood - close the refrigerator door - turn out the lights - you are wasting electricity and money - don't gawk at that idiot box you are wasting your time - quit pulling so many paper towels off the roll you're wasting trees.
One I got in trouble for regularly was putting too much food on my plate and not eating all of it (hard to imagine that I did not eat all the food on my plate - though it is hard to believe looking at me my eyes can be bigger than my stomach). I was bad about squirting too much catsup on my plate. Catsup was very important at the table because mom had a bad habit too, a habit of making me eat things I did not like and sometimes the only way to choke it down was with Catsup ...dad could not stand to see us waste food on our plate. To teach us a lesson he came up with a rule (great thing about being dad you can make up rules). If you poured more catsup on your plate than you needed with your food you could not scrape it in the trashcan you had to eat it with a spoon. Eating spoonfuls of catsup is not exactly a good way to finish up a meal it kind of ruins everything before it.
While I did not like eating catsup with a spoon it did not take long before you were careful how much you put on the plate either - very creative way to get your point across - and I did come to understand that it is not a wise or good use of your resources to waste them.
