So our scripture reading for today is from Romans 1:16-17:

16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, ''The righteous shall live by faith.''

In December of 405 AD the Rhine River froze. And on December 31 405 a group of vandals, barbarians, Visigoths, successfully crossed the Rhine River... Now Rome as it was known wouldn't officially fall for another 70 years when the last Roman Emperor Romulus was deposed by the Barbarians but it was 405, it was the crossing of the Rhine that marked the beginning of the end for the Romans. And what had been Rome, what had been glorious and big and beautiful, had been hollowing out for 70 years and really before... The first really public manifestation of the Fall of Rome was in 410 with the Visigoth leader Alaric sacked the city of Rome. And the whole world was shocked because you see before this Rome was thought to be and for good reason impenetrable and for the first time in Roman history the city seemed volatile. And the Roman citizens during this time were shocked, how was this happening? How had Rome become so weak?

And people started blaming and growing in their contempt for Christianity. They asked is the Romans new found faith in Christianity to blame for all of this?

And in this middle of the collapse of the Romans empire, in the middle of all of this angsts against Christianity, there was a voice, a preacher, a church leader named Augustine. And in 426 he published a book called, The City of God. And in this book Augustine explained that the Fall of Rome wasn't happening because of Christianity but rather that it was happening in spite of Christianity...
