[BEGIN WITH CLIP FROM THE GOONIES - THIS IS OUR TIME] ''The Goonies'' has every element to it that makes it's a classic to a kid. You've got kids rescuing their parents and their town, escaping from bad guys, adventuring through caverns and caves, all the while doing it together as a group of friends. Of course, the entire story hinges on the coolest part of the story, a search for hidden treasure on a lost pirate ship. I can't tell you how badly I wanted to be a Goonie as a kid. Now of course the search for treasure is one that requires a little convincing for some, as we saw in the clip here. In the face of danger and uncertainty, the easiest choice is simply to give up.

And so what we saw in this clip is the young Mikey make a plea to his gang of why the treasure is worth seeking. Notice that he didn't really address the objections or fears raised by his friends; instead his argument is based simply on the belief that the treasure is worth it. ''The treasure is so great and will solve the problem our families are facing that it is worth the risk.'' And Mikey's admonition works and the friends continue on their journey.

You might say that Proverbs 2 is one big motivational speech as well. Despite the punctuation marks you'll see in your English translation, the entire chapter is technically just one long sentence. And this one thought is devoted toward admonishing us, the son, toward a pursuit of wisdom. The purpose of this chapter is to motivate us to actively seek wisdom, the content of which is only hinted at indirectly throughout the chapter. In other words, while the treasure of wisdom awaits us in the rest of the book of Proverbs, we have here first a speech given to talk us out of giving up and taking the easy path in life, and instead to move us to carrying on the path and p ...
