Introduction

The wise poet Barrett Strong sang in 1959 that, ''The best things in life are free but you can keep them for the birds and bees. Now give me money; that's what I want...You're lovin' gives me a thrill but you're lovin' don't pay my bills. Now give me money; that's what I want...Money don't get everything it's true. What it don't get, I can't use. Now give me money; that's what I want.'' This song has been remade a number of times over the last fifty years proving how the song itself has staying power. The lyrics are both satirical and true. I'm not saying this pertains to every individual or even to you, but our culture is obsessed with money.

But it's not just our culture or Western culture or modern culture. You remember Paul wrote to Timothy, ''For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.'' Jesus taught, ''No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.'' In other words the love of money and obsession with possessions and wealth is not just a cultural thing; it's a human thing.

Why? Because we're all idolaters when it comes down to it. The natural man loves himself above all else. We may do nice things for others; we may inconvenience ourselves at times; we may put lipstick on the pig but at our core the unregenerate person is above all else a worshipper of self. And money feeds that worship; as Jesus taught, ''For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.''
