Proverbs 13:26
Introduction
I think if there is one clear thing that the church and the wider culture agree upon it's the value of friendship. I think about the Pixar film Toy Story which tells of the value of friendship in the trials and ever-changing patterns of life. Randy Newman's theme song for that movie recounts, ''When the road looks rough ahead and you're miles and miles from your nice warm bed you just remember what your old pal said, 'Boy, you've got a friend in me.'''
T.V. sitcoms throughout the years have affirmed the value of friendship, from modern takes such as ''New Girl'' or ''The Big Bang Theory,'' to 90s classics like ''Seinfeld'' and ''Friends,'' on back to ''Cheers'' and before that ''Laverne and Shirley'', ''Three's Company'', and ''Good Times.'' In each of these shows runs the common theme that life can be hard but going through it with friends can make all the difference. I would argue that what each of these pieces of pop culture tout is the conviction which Thomas Aquinas argued, that being that friendship is the most prized thing one can have on earth. The Proverbs have quite a bit to say about friendship, showing both its priceless value as well as showing us how to cultivate and maintain friendships. While one's family is certainly important (as we discussed last week) the Proverbs suggest that sometimes a good friend is better to have than family. Whether in times of rejoicing or sadness, in times of praise or rebuke, godly friendships are essential to human life; therefore, we must ensure we develop and maintain such relationships our entire lives.
