Introduction

I'd like to begin this morning by reading from our passage in Romans this morning, beginning in verse 20. [Read Romans 1: 20-25] What we learn from the words of the apostle Paul is that it is man's inclination, his default state of being, to worship things which are made rather than the One who created them. We call this idolatry, and it is a sin which affects every single human being who walks this earth.

Each one of us has the propensity to exchange the truth of God for a lie, and to worship and serve some created thing rather than our Creator. For some these things are easy to spot. Money and possessions tend to be a common American idol. No we don't literally lay money on an altar and bow down and sing songs to it, but by the way we regard it, by the way we treat it. Many of us here this morning most likely have the tendency to evaluate the goodness of our lives by the amount of financial security we have or possessions we have, making wealth and possessions an idol.

For others it may be that our appearance is the most important thing to us, or perhaps relationships, the feeling of being loved is our primary pursuit. For some it may be a much more biblical idolatry, primarily through false religions. The gods of Hinduism, Buddhism, prophets like Mohammed, are all idols, creations of man. In Moses' day there was a large emphasis on pantheism, the idea that the earth and creation itself is god. In other words God is this being which is contained in all living, natural creatures. This view has persisted into our day.

Finally, for many there is the idol of the non-idol. In other words many people in American today simply worship the fact that they worship nothing at al either in an atheistic or agnostic way. If God does exists, which is questionable in and of itself, then He certainly has nothing to do with ...
