Introduction

This morning our study of Genesis takes us to everyone's favorite topic: sin. I mean I know that everyone enjoyed talking weeks ago about finding purpose in your work; I got a lot of great sentiments about our study on marriage, but in reality, I know this is what you've really have wanted to talk about. You've just been itching for us to get to Genesis 3 and talk about sin, and what a sinner you are and I am and everyone is. By your smiles, I'm assuming that you aren't so excited to talk about sin.

It's not very surprising because sin is an extremely polarizing topic in our American society. For starters, no one, not one of us, likes to be told there is something wrong with us. I mean even when I already know it to be true I still hate it when a person points something out about me that is wrong. We're so prideful that we just hate to have our flaws pointed out. Moreover, we hate to be judged. ''Who are you to judge me,'' is often the response. Even when rightly judged we still hate it. This is why folks get so mad at cops for writing tickets or at parking meter attendants. I mean in reality you deserve the ticket, but having gotten caught we still fight it. And we aren't immune to these feelings inside the church. In fact, sadly, judgment within the church is one of the biggest reasons that folks stop attending and participating. Sometimes we are made to feel so bad that we lose any desire to come back to the fellowship.

And, so, its no wonder that the word ''sin'' makes people cringe. We don't want to hear where we are failing, we don't want to feel judged by a preacher, and we don't want to feel like everyone is evaluating us. But you know what, I'm not going to try this morning to make you feel differently about it, because in reality, we shouldn't be comfortable with talking about sin. It should ma ...
