Introduction

This morning as we dive back into our study of Genesis, we transition to a new section in the book. Whereas we've spent the last six weeks of our series in the account of Creation and the Garden of Eden, chapter four begins with Adam and Eve having been expelled from the Garden for their sin. Chapters 1-3 have focused on the sovereignty of God, His supremacy, His authority over man, but as well on His blessing and goodness to Man. If someone were to ask you, what are the first three chapters of the book of Genesis about, we could simply and succinctly say, that God has created everything, He rules everything, and He loves us dearly. But as we saw in chapter 3, despite these things, human beings have chosen to disobey and reject God's Word rather than worship Him as the glorious King He is.

And so then we see two key things emerge from Adam's fall into sin. Sin now infects the entire human race, and like any cancer, it will grow and will increase. And, yet, we will see one other thing emerge, that being, the continuation of God's commandment to man to fill and cultivate the earth as well as His maintaining of the promise to send a redeemer. Now before we jump into this section, I just want to call to your attention how unfitting these two things are together. As sin increases and man's wickedness abounds you would only expect God to withdraw from man and allow him to destroy himself. And, yet, we will see this amazing portrait from chapter 4 through chapter 11 of how God mercifully continues to call man to repentance, God calls man to participate with Him in that initial commandment to fill the earth with worshipers to the glory of God, and God continues to preserve the seed of the woman and the lineage which would produce the promised Messiah and Redeemer.
