Introduction

If I were to ask you, ''What's going on in your life right now,'' what would you say? Beyond just the formalities of chit-chat, if you were to give a completely honest answer, what would you say? Are you thinking of something exciting, something happy and thrilling that's happening to you? Are you thinking of something difficult, something uncertain, or perhaps just hard and lonely? Are you thinking that, you know what, nothing is going on right now, not a single thing outside the ordinary mundane routine of life.

Now, how you answer that question may have something to do with your personality, but chances are good that most people, I think, would answer probably with the last response, that not a whole lot is going on. I mean just think about how we usually speak to one another. ''Hey buddy, what's going on? Oh not a whole lot. What's up with you? Oh, nothing much.'' You see, save those select moments in life of intense hardship and suffering, or those moments in life of surreal joy and prosperity, we find ourselves living in the middle. Most of life is spent not on the mountaintops or in the dark valleys, but instead on a seemingly flat plateau.

This is where we tend to find our marriages, not in a high or in a low, but in a normal, predictable, complacent state. There is where we tend to find our work, not getting fired nor are we getting promoted, but day in and day out just doing our job. I know this is where we Virginia fans often find ourselves, certainly not a bad team, but seemingly never a really great team either. Life is spent somewhere in the middle, waiting it seems for either something bad or good to happen.
