Introduction

Robert Frost must have been reflecting on Psalm 1 when he wrote of how two roads diverged in the wood and he took the one less traveled, which made all the difference. You remember from Genesis 6 a few weeks back, that I argued, that among many things the story of Noah and the Flood illustrates the truth of Psalm 1: that the path of righteousness leads to life and the path of wickedness leads to death. Humanity had taken the blessings of marriage and of stewardship over creation and had perverted them into self-gratifying idols. Thus, God rightly judges man and the earth he has corrupted. Noah, however, found favor in the eyes of the Lord, and by faith trusted the Word and promise of God and was saved from the floodwaters. I mean when we reflect on the last few weeks we can see how Noah has been an exemplary model for us thus far in the book of Genesis. He's demonstrated remarkable faith and personal holiness. Not only did he trust God in building the ark; but last week we saw what great peace and patience that faith gave Noah even in the loneliest of times. Each one of us would benefit significantly from modeling our faith and actions after Noah. Even the book of Hebrews, in chapter 11, places Noah within the Hall of Faith, pointing to him as a great model for Christians. He is, indeed, a hero for us.

But, he is also still a fallible sinner. Genesis 9 can be quite an embarrassing story; it is one that will certainly make us uncomfortable. I mean you've just got to stop and wonder for a moment why verses 18-29 are included in the text? I mean, of course, the Holy Spirit would inspire Moses to record the covenant God confirms with humanity and creation; verses 1-17 are paramount to us understanding God's covenantal redemptive work in history.
