Introduction

Two weeks ago we began to look at the sovereign mission of God by looking at the Table of Nations in Genesis 10 and then how those nations were dispersed through the episode of the Tower of Babel in Genesis 11. Genesis 10 and the first part of chapter 11 focused on the nations of humanity in relation to the mission of God. In Genesis 10 we saw them scatter across the earth in order to fill it, as they were told to. In Genesis 11, again they are scattering, but in a state of confusion and division that thwarts their arrogant attempts at self-built unification and worship. As we continue on this morning, then, we must not forget this context of the nations filling the earth, or else we will fail to see the full extent of God's covenant in chapter 12. In other words, God's promise to Abram in Genesis 12 is God's answer to the problem of the nations in Genesis 10 and 11.

For you see the calling of Abram in Genesis 12 is the beginning of the end. We've been talking in great depth for five months about the beginning, how God created everything. God is the main character of the Bible, of creation, of everything, and He created everything in perfect harmony. Part of the perfect harmonious nature He created was the fact that He has designed human beings to know Him and enjoy Him by worshiping and obeying Him. However, despite this perfect harmony in which we were made, we have taken the free blessings of God and rejected Him. Thus, we've seen since Genesis 3 how the cancer of sin has inhibited humanity from fulfilling that purpose. Essentially, as we concluded two weeks ago, Genesis 3-11 is the problem. Genesis 3:15, however, was a promise made by God to rescue us and creation from sin. As we will see this morning, Genesis 12 and onward is the promise kept, or the solution to sin.
