Introduction

One of the things Aiden has really developed a knack for is doing puzzles. Now obviously him only being 21 months old we're not doing anything crazy complex with him...just your average 1000 piece, 3D puzzles, like any normal 2 year old would do. No, puzzles are fun though, getting to see something come into shape and form; seeing how all these little pieces fit together into one grander picture. As we all know, though, the key to doing a puzzle is having the box top nearby and visible. I mean props to you if you don't need it, but for me, its hard to know where to put a certain piece of the puzzle, if I can't see the bigger picture. You see individual pieces often feel lost or pointless unless they are perfectly square within their context. It's like an orchestra where each section plays an individual part, and only in unison together do all the pieces fit together into one magnificent symphonic masterpiece.

How true this is of the Bible as well. You see one of the struggles we often face, especially with the Old Testament, is learning how to see the bigger picture. We often fail to see how these individual stories fit within the grand narrative of redemptive history. It easier to just turn these various chapters of Genesis into self-contained moralistic stories, rather than pieces of a big theological puzzle. Some of this is due to the fact that we aren't very good Jews who understand the Hebrew way of thinking and organizing information. In addition to that, as 21st century Westerners, we struggle to understand this ancient, near-Eastern pattern of thought and narrative.
