Introduction

In Genesis 1 we read,

''Then God said, ''Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.''

So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.

And God blessed them. And God said to them, ''Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.'''' 

God established Adam, and mankind through him, to be servant kings and queens over all creation. Adam was to serve God and obey Him by exercising dominion over the earth, and by extending the borders of Eden to the very ends of the earth. As we saw three weeks ago in our recap of Genesis 1-12, God desires to make the whole earth His temple-city, which man is to obediently follow Him in building. Clearly, there is a kingly aspect to the creation and calling of human beings.

Later in Genesis 2, though, we read, ''The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and keep it.'' You hopefully remember by this point that these verbs, work and keep, are used elsewhere in the Moses' writings to represent the priestly duties of the Levites in the Tabernacle. In other words, Adam and Eve are to work, they are to exercise dominion and represent God in everything they do, but they are to do so in a worshipful, obedient way. Thus, not only are they kings and queens under God's lordship, but also are priests in God's creation. They are to worship God in all they do, and they are to lead others to do the same.
