Introduction

The book of Hebrews is not so much actually a letter, but a sermon in which the unknown author is exhorting Jewish Christians to progress to full maturity in Jesus Christ. You see as we find throughout the New Testament, the earliest converts to Christianity struggled with how to make sense of Jesus and the worship of God in light of the law of Moses. Jesus says He did not come to abolish the law but uphold it and fulfill it; so we can't just ignore all that the Old Testament teaches. However, at the same time, one of the clearest things we've seen in just the first 14 chapters of Genesis is how the Old Testament was always looking forward to its fulfillment in the promised seed of Eve.

Thus, the author to the Hebrews sets out to demonstrate how Jesus is the fulfillment of all God promised and how He has fulfilled for us God's calling on our lives. Simply put, it is only by faith in Jesus Christ that we receive God's promise of life and we receive the ability to rightly worship and serve Him. This is exemplified in Hebrews 7 where the author shows how Jesus is our great High Priest and is the one who enables us to live as priests of God. Now this obviously a loaded term we're using of priest. It carries with it several connotations. To the Jews the title priest would have evoked thoughts of the Levitical priesthood; that office and class of men who were to offer sacrifices on behalf of the people. For many of us, the title of priest evokes a similar thought, but not of Levitical priests, but of Roman Catholic priest. Akin to Judaism, Roman Catholicism teaches that this certain class of people are necessary to again offer sacrifice and intercession on our behalf.
