Genesis 20:1-18
Introduction
Do you ever look around you and find yourself overwhelmed by the amount of sin and evil that stands in the way of the promises of God? For example, when we gather on Monday and Friday mornings for corporate prayer and we begin praying for our world and for the nations, how often our conversations and prayers begin to dwell on the sheer violence and destruction that plagues this world. How can the Gospel advance when Christians are being slaughtered in places like Iraq or South Asia or the Pacific Rim? How can there be peace when nations are torn apart by civil war and unrest? I mean even though God has said He will give the nations to Christ and His people as an inheritance to rule over in peace, there seems to be so much standing in His way, blocking His kingdom from truly coming.
Do you ever look within you and find yourself overwhelmed by the amount of sin and evil that stands internally from you living in the promises of God? In other words, there seems to be a lot of sin and wickedness in our world today, but if we're honest with ourselves there seems to be more simply within our own hearts and minds. Like Paul we find ourselves saying, '' I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate...Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?'' Maybe its not so clear for you, you're not sure exactly what it is within you that is so displeasing, but all you know is that the life you're living is not what you wish it would be. The Bible says that in Christ we are made new creatures, holy and righteous children of God, and yet the testimony of our lives seem to say the exact opposite. How can we ever stand before God at His glorious throne clothed in righteous deeds when our hearts continually seek out and choose sin over His law?
Quite frankly, there is seemingly too much in the way of the promises of God ...
