Introduction

As I've shared with you all before, your pastor was at one time a used-car salesman. I know, talk about a Damascus Road conversion! You meet a lot of people selling cars, and you experience a lot of different things. I've got lots of interesting stories, but there's one I don't think I'll ever forget. I had this customer come in one evening who was 19 years old and his grandmother had just died. She had left him her life's savings, which she wanted him to apply to paying for college. Instead, this 19 year old was going to use the $90,000 his grandmother had left him to buy new cars. The ironic thing is that he had come to CarMax to buy these cars rather than buying new because buying used was a better use of the money than buying new. Go figure. Well, once he shared with me this story, I told him I could not allow him to spend his inheritance this way. I said, maybe if he wanted to do something smart like a Honda Accord which would last him a long time, then maybe, but I could not allow him to spend his inheritance on a Hummer and Nissan 350z. I actually turned the kid away, though I can only imagine that he just ended up going somewhere else to waste his inheritance.

The thing is, it wasn't that I was looking out for this kid; I was trying to look out for his poor deceased grandmother. I mean bless her heart. I can only imagine how hard she worked and how long she had saved to accumulate $90,000. That money meant a lot to her and her grandson obviously meant a lot to her. She died wanting to be sure that her offspring would be well cared for and given every opportunity to be blessed in life. And who wouldn't want that for their offspring. I mean isn't this really the most important duty we have as parents and grandparents, to provide for our kids and ensure they are blessed? We want them to have a good inheritance. And ...
