Introduction

If you think back over the last thirty-something chapters of the book of Genesis, what might you say has been the biggest obstacle standing in the way of the promises of God from coming to fulfillment? I mean think back to Genesis 3:15, God promised that the seed of woman would be the means of rescue and redemption, what has been the biggest threat to that seed? What tangible thing has most endangered the people of God from receiving His blessing? I believe most clearly it has been the people of God themselves!

I mean we could try to blame foreign oppression or Satan. Existentially we could say evil or sin has been the greatest threat, though philosophically speaking these things are not really things, they have no being. There's a lot we could say has been an obstacle to promises of God, but the narrative of Genesis has focused quite clearly and simply on the people of God themselves. It was Adam himself that rebelled against God in Genesis 3. It was the godly lineage of Seth in Genesis 5-7 who forsook God's calling. It was Noah's drunkenness and the sin of Ham that endangered the promise after the flood. It was Abraham's lack of trust in Genesis 16 and 21 that threatened the inheritance of Isaac. It was Isaac's parental failures that stood in the way in Genesis 26-27. It was Jacob's arrogance and pride that proved to endanger the promise in Genesis 29.

Quite simply: what has often threatened God's people from receiving His blessing? God's people! I mean, maybe I'm alone here on this, but I know that most of the time my struggles are my own fault; I am often my own worse enemy. I am the reason for not being more mature in the faith.
