Genesis 39:1-23
Introduction
Last week in the Genesis 38 story of Judah and Tamar we saw how our sin has consequences, but also how God is faithful to overcome our sin, to keep His promises, and to lead us to repentance. We saw, simply, how God works through hidden, unseen means to carry out His will and to get us where we need to be. I know from how the text challenged me as well as from hearing from many of you, how we as a church needed to be shown the damaging nature of our sin but also shown how God welcomes us when we repent and turn to Him. I think for many of us we saw how some of our hardships in life are caused by our sin, by our idolatry, how sometimes the tough things we endure in life really are the result of our own doing. But it wasn't a passage last week that just beat us up; oddly enough Genesis 38 was a passage of great hope because we were assured last week that though our sin has consequences God never leaves nor forsakes us! Hopefully, then, this past week has been a time of repentance for all of us; a time of soul searching and of turning away from our sins and to the gracious arms of God in Christ Jesus!
At the same time, not all our hardships in life are our own doing. Not everything we suffer is because of our sin. In other words, if you sit here this morning and feel that God is not close or you are struggling to discern what He is doing in your life, that hiddenness may be because of your sin, but it very well may not be because of sin. As Genesis 39 shows us this morning, it may just be that G ...
