Genesis 44:14-45:28
Introduction
I can remember as a kid having epic arguments and fights, particularly with my mother. My mother and I are very similar, which means that not only do we understand each other well but because we're so similar sometimes we could have major combat of wills. Life was very structured, but not overly so. Grades were a top priority and who I was allowed to be friends with was very restricted. Many times I can remember asking to go over to someone's house or to do something with a group of friends and Mom simply saying, ''No.'' We'd argue, I'd ask why, eventually these arguments would end with her saying something to the effect of, ''One day you'll understand why,'' ... Boy, that one really would annoy me.
For years I never understood why and honestly just figured my mom was just a really strict and unreasonable woman. (If you're listening to this mom, I love you!) But then I got married, started living as an adult and then the most transformative thing happened: I had my own kids. Isn't it amazing the deeper appreciation for your own parents that you develop once you become a parent yourself? It is only in now disciplining my own children that I understand what Mom was doing all along. And it's incredibly rewarding to see the wisdom of her actions aa it has really brought the two of us closer together as we talk about it now. I say to her all the time, ''Mom, you were a wonderful parent.'' And wouldn't you guys agree? I turned out really well, didn't I?
[Ha] No, in all seriousness it's been important though to see and to understand what Mom was doing. It has helped me to trust her and to see just how deeply she loves me. Of course, I knew that before, but seeing the fruition of what she was doing has incredibly blessed our relationship today.
I bring this up this morning because as believers we trust God; we kno ...
