Nehemiah 1:1-11
A man decided to take a bus trip across country. When he went to buy his ticket, he was informed that first class-seats cost $100, second-class seats were $50 and third-class seats were $25. The man looked inside the bus and all the seats looked the same to him so he bought a third-class seat and he congratulated himself on saving so much money.
After traveling for some time the journey brought them to the mountains. After about 30 minutes of mountain roads the bus came to a stop at the base of a very, very steep hill. The driver stood up and said, ''First-class passengers please remain seated. Second-class passengers please get out and walk. Third-class passengers, please get out and push!''
Everyone needs a good push every now and then to help us up the steep hills and mountains in our lives. Today, as we start a new study in the Book of Nehemiah, Building Dreams and Restoring Lives, we find a people in need of a push.
After years of exile because of their sin God once again began a work in Jerusalem to reconstitute this remnant as His people. The process was plagued by discouragement, fear, selfishness and opposition. Because of this, after over 7 decades, the work had not been finished even after the work of Zerubbabel, Ezra, Haggai and Zechariah.
- The Jewish people had again stalled in their quest to become a viable and vibrant nation again.
- They faltered in their calling to recapture the spiritual heritage and purpose for which God had chosen them and returned them to the land.
They needed a push. They needed a leader. They were in need of what we are still in desperate need of today, a God called, God motivated, God matured and God focused leader.
Dr. Johnny Hunt said, ''Whenever there is a job to be done, a God-given vision to be filled, God lays hold of a willing heart.''
