Nehemiah 2:1-8
There were two old feuding mountain men living in the backwoods of the Ozarks: Rufus and Clarence. They lived on opposite sides of the river and they hated each other. Every morning just after sunup, Rufus and Clarence would to down to their respective sides of the river and yell at each other. ''Rufus!'' Clarence would shout, you better thank your lucky stars that I can't swim, er I'd swim this river and whup ya!'' Rufus would holler back - ''Clarence, you better thank YOUR lucky stars that I can't swim or I'd whup up on YOU!'' Every morning, every day for 20 years this went on. Then one day the Army Corps of engineers came along and built a bridge. The insults continued to go on every morning, every day for 5 more years.
Finally, Mrs. Rufus had had enough. ''Rufus!'' she hollered one day, ''I can't take no more! Every day for 25 years you've been threatnin' to whip Clarence, well now there's a bridge! Have at it! Rufus thought it over for a minute, chewed his bottom lip for a moment and snapped his suspenders and said woman, ''I'm a gonna do it. Today I am gonna whup Clarence.
He walked out the door and down to the river to the bridge, stepped up onto the bridge, walked about halfway over the bridge when he turned tail, and ran screaming like girl back to the house. He rushed in slamming the door, bolted the windows, grabbed the shotgun and dove under the bed.
His wife said Rufus, land sakes what's wrong wid ya. I thunk you was gonna go whup Clarence. He whispered, I was woman I was - so she asked well what in the tarnation is the matter wif ya. Rufus said - well I was a crossin that bridge yonder and I looked up and seen a sign that said Caution - Clearance 13ft 6inches - He ain't never looked that big from my side the river.
