Introduction

Jesus prays in John 17,

They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth. I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word.

Jesus says we are not of this world; we are not to be corrupted by this world. We must be sanctified, literally, to be set apart from the world. But Jesus doesn't stop there, but says that as we are set apart from the world, we are then sent back into it. I mean that's kind of confusing. We are set apart from the world and then yet sent back into it. You have been set apart from your lost neighbors, lost co-workers, lost family and yet Jesus has sent you back into the lives of your lost neighbors, lost co-workers, and lost family. How can we be set apart from lostness and yet faithfully obey Jesus by being sent into lostness? How can we be made light and yet faithfully be sent back into darkness?

This is the question hopefully you have already been asking in your life: ''How can I be apart of God's mission in the every day routine of life?'' ''How can I be a sanctified missionary for God?'' Paul answers in Ephesians 5:3-20 that as we have been made citizens of God's Kingdom and members of His household we are to reflect in our conduct and speech the newness of life in Christ while humbly speaking His light into the darkness around us that others may be saved from their sin as we so graciously have been.
