Introduction

Last week we picked up our study of the church at Ephesus by opening the book of 1 Timothy. We briefly introduced Paul's letter in which we saw how despite the solid foundations of the church, which we witnessed in the book of Acts, and the encouragement of the church which we witnessed in Ephesians, how this church had grown lax in its appointment of leaders and had allowed false teaching to influence both its doctrine and its practice. In particular we saw how some were perverting and modifying the Old Testament to teach a works-based form of salvation. And so Paul began his exhortation by charging Timothy not to allow such false doctrine. Essentially Paul did so by showing us what God's Word is not; how the Law and Old Testament may not be used. What we saw last week is that all things are rooted and founded in Christ. If we get the Gospel wrong, if we fail to faithfully receive Jesus, we will get everything else wrong.

It reminds me of a story we're given in the book of Acts about Philip and an Ethiopian eunuch. In chapter eight Luke recounts for us:

Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, ''Rise and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.'' This is a desert place. And he rose and went. And there was an Ethiopian, a eunuch, a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of all her treasure. He had come to Jerusalem to worship and was returning, seated in his chariot, and he was reading the prophet Isaiah. And the Spirit said to Philip, ''Go over and join this chariot.'' So Philip ran to him and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, ''Do you understand what you are reading?'' And he said, ''How can I, unless someone guides me?'' And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. Now the pass ...
