Introduction

Paul's first letter to Timothy makes an argument that is much needed in the Western church today. That argument, which we've seen since 1 Timothy 1:1 has been that God alone establishes the purpose of the church and that He alone determines and sets the mission of the church. These two things perhaps do not surprise us and we would have no problem in embracing them. But Paul has not stopped there. Because it is God's purpose and God's mission, the church is to be organized and to conduct itself in the way God alone decides. In other words, God doesn't just tell us what we are to do; He tells us how we are to do it. One pastor has recently called 1 Timothy the blueprint for God's church, meaning how Paul tells us to organize and to conduct the local church is not an option, but Christ-given command.

And one of the most central commands or blueprints we are given in 1 Timothy is how the church is to be led and served. Paul has shown us that the Word of God is the foundation of God's Household, understood and applied solely through the lens of the Gospel. He has shown us that upon this foundation we are to take the Gospel to all the nations for God's desire is to save people from every tribe and every tongue. He next has told us that we must do so in holiness and submissiveness, our hearts must be sincerely oriented to God's desire for our church, not our own.

He continues, therefore, this morning by showing us the absolute necessity of having proper leadership in order to accomplish these things. In other words, without proper leadership in the local church the Word of God can be corrupted and the gospel lost; without proper leadership in the local church the mission of God can be corrupted and lost; without proper leadership in the local church ...
