Introduction
The wise modern lyricist Paul Hewson once wrote, ''a house doesn't make a home.'' Now if you're trying to figure out who Paul Hewson is, you mostly likely know him not by his proper name but by the stage name he goes by: Bono of the band U2. Bono quotes the well-known saying in the band's 2004 Grammy award-winning single, ''Sometimes You Can't Make It on Your Own.'' It's a song that he wrote about his father and the struggles that the two had experienced in their relationship as father and son. It's sad, but so often husbands and fathers believe their sole duty is to provide physically for their families, neglecting the real call to provide not a house, but a home. I mean a house is great, and we thank God for our shelter, but a house is just a physical structure; as Bono says, it doesn't make a home.
I think about just two weeks ago and going away for the weekend. It's nice to get away and to do something different, but I am always eager to get back home, and I've come to realize that it's not the house, but it's the routine that Teresa, Aiden, Charley, and I have with one another. Our stuff helps and is a part of the routine, but our household is not 168 Fairway Ct., its Patrick, Teresa, Aiden, Charley, and especially Sawyer.
The same thing is true of the household of God. We can't help it, but unfortunately whenever we hear the terms 'temple' or 'church' we invariably think of the building. I myself am considerably guilty of it. I tell Aiden, ''We're going to church,'' or ''I've got to go swing by the church,'' as if church is a place. But the Scriptures, starting back to Genesis 2, paint a dramatically different picture.
