Introduction
For the past fourteen months we've had the privilege as a church of watching the life of another local church over the course of forty years. In Acts 18-20 we saw the birth and early years of the church at Ephesus; in Paul's letter to the Ephesians we saw the early needs of that church just seven to ten years into its existence. In 1 and 2 Timothy we saw the struggles of the church to remain faithful to the Gospel in both doctrine and practice; and then in John's three letters we saw how this church sought to maintain its fidelity to the Gospel amid outside attacks. Our purpose throughout this series has been to see what God calls us to as a local church by studying the life of this one church located in and around the city of Ephesus.
It's really, I think, been a fruitful study to see both the strengths and the struggles of this one church over the course of forty years and this morning we conclude our study with the last piece of Scripture that was written particularly to this church at Ephesus, Revelation 2. This was the last thing inspired of the Holy Spirit given to this church. And as we'll see this morning, I think this passage bears special meaning to those of us who have conscientiously followed this church since its inception, because when we read the words of encouragement we are able to celebrate because we've seen the struggles this church has faced throughout its life. But also when we read the words of warning we are able to take them very seriously because we know how shocking it really is for the church to be in the condition it presently is.
