Fuel for a Grateful Heart
Robert Dawson
Psalm 103
One Peanuts cartoon pictured Charlie Brown bringing out Snoopy's dinner on Thanksgiving Day. But it was just his usual dog food in a bowl. Snoopy took one look at the dog food and said, 'This isn't fair. The rest of the world is eating turkey with all the trimmings, and all I get is dog food. Because, I am a dog, all I get is dog food.' He stood there and stared at his dog food for a moment, and said, 'I guess it could be worse. I could be a turkey.'
It is the time to give thanks but for some of us that is a difficult job.
1. We sit and ponder whether or not our cup is half full or half empty rather than being thankful, one that we have a cup and two that there is something in it at all.
2. Some of us have adopted as our life's verse Psalm 55.17a - Evening and morning and at noon, I will complain and murmur.
All of us, if we were honest, know we have reason to give thanks. If we stopped to think about it there are things we complain about that should actually be a catalyst for giving thanks.
Have you ever thought to be thankful for dirty dishes?
Thank God for dirty dishes
They have a story to tell;
While others may go hungry
We've eaten very well
With home, health, and happiness
I shouldn't want to fuss;
By the stack of evidence
God's been very good to us
(We have all had those years where it seems that whatever we own is going to break or need to be replaced, not the small things but the big ones --- we have had one of those years. Things around the house, A/C and Septic Tank Drain Fill and busted tire, that have died and needs to be replaced --- drain field --- frustrating, no one likes to let go of the money --- but I am grateful I live where raw sewage goes into a tank at my house and your house and does not flow down the streets and into the water)
We have reason to give thanks...
