Secret Service Agents, Department of Treasury investigators and bank tellers are trained to identify counterfeit money. There are many counterfeit $10 and $20 bills; $20 is the most common. Because it's so common, these people are trained to determine the difference between what is true and what is false. And the method they use to distinguish between the two is very interesting. They are instructed to study the real $20 bill over and over again. Instead of studying all the counterfeits, know the real thing that when a counterfeit comes you can spot it in an instant.
For us to know the truth and to distinguish the true from the false, we must know the real thing. That's what John is concerned about as he writes his letter entitled 1 John in the New Testament of your Bible. He's battling false teaching and wants to identify and emphasize the real thing. That's why we've entitled our series, Authentic Christianity. We want to study, to learn, to immerse ourselves in the truth of what Christianity is so that when false teachings come our way, we can spot them immediately.
John is facing the same questions in his day that we encounter today. In short, false teachers were distorting the truth about Jesus.
They taught a new theology that compromised the uniqueness of the person and work of Christ. John responds by teaching that Jesus Christ is the incarnate Son of God whose death provides forgiveness of sin.
They taught a new morality that minimized the importance of sin; they claimed to have fellowship with God despite their unrighteous behavior. But John says that Christianity has ethical implications; fellowship with God requires righteousness.
They taught a new spirituality resulting in spiritual arrogance and consequently, they didn't show love to one another. But John shows us that God is love and love for others is a mark of true Christian ...
