True or False (6 of 14)
Series: Authentic Christianity

1 John 2:18-29
Intro/Attention
As we've walked through this letter from John together, we've noticed two major themes emerge: first, John is fighting against false teachers and second, John is encouraging true believers. John uses the contrasts of light and darkness, love and hate and here, he uses the contrast of truth and error.
John is concerned about us knowing the truth and living the truth. So far in his letter he has presented three tests to determine if you are truly a child of God. There is the test of ''love'' the test of ''righteousness'' and here we see the test of ''truth.''
God has warned the church family about the conflict between light and darkness (1 John 1:1-2:6) and between love and hatred (1 John 2:7-17). Now He warns them about a third conflict: the conflict between truth and error. It is not enough for a believer to walk in the light and to walk in love; he must also walk in truth.
In other words, this is a ''true or false'' test. When I was in school there were all sorts of questions and all sorts of tests. There were multiple choice, short answer, essay and true/false. I always liked the true false because even if you guessed there was a 50% chance you would be right. Well here, John gives us a true/false test for our souls. The answers are either yes or no, true or false, there's really no in between.
But before we examine the test that John gives, we must tackle a deeper issue and a greater problem that we encounter in our world: does truth exist? That we would even ask this question seems silly and futile but this is a question that our world is asking and we must address. Is there such a thing as truth? I would say ''yes,'' absolutely. And here, we see John identifying and explaining that truth.
So the question is, what does true faith look like/what does it mean to have real faith? In 1 John 2:18-29 John gives several evidences of a true fai ...
