Intro/Attention

As we continue to study the book of 1 John in our series entitled Authentic Christianity, we come to a set of verses today that shows us How to Live a Godly Life.

There are many ''how-to'' books and workshops these days. There are all sorts of instructions for almost anything you can imagine. In fact, do you remember Home Depot's slogan from a couple of years ago? ''You can do it, we can help.''

In fact, these days, if you want to build something, fix an appliance, or repair your vehicle, you can find a YouTube video for virtually anything. Just look it up. Now, it might look easier on video, but there are some experts out there who can show you how it's done. For me, it never quite works out like it does with those YouTube experts.

I remember when Jake was about to turn two years old, Stephanie began researching an interesting ''how-to'' topic...how to potty train your child. Through her study, she discovered a method of potty training called the 7-day/75-dollar method. We began potty training Jake this week following this method. You take 7 days to potty train your child, making no plans to leave the house or take your child anywhere. You take the diaper off and the child is naked from the waste down. The idea is that if a child is going to have an accident, he or she will have the accident on themselves and that is not desirable. This has worked very well with Jake...and every Perdue child since. All five have been successfully potty-trained. Oh yeah, the $75 is for the carpet cleaning bill after the 7 days is over!

There are many ''how-to'' guides in this world, but one that we should be concerned about more than any other is How to Live a Godly Life. Here in 1 John 3:1-24, John shows us several elements that are necessary in order to live a godly life...
