I remember being little, well let's say I remember being young. I don't really remember being little. During the summer we would usually make it to the beach. It was our usual family vacation spot and I enjoyed the beach back then, more than I do now, but I would wade out into the water, just not too deep (I was part of that Jaws generation). Those waves, seemed so big and rough, would come crashing in with all that force and momentum and knock me down and just drive you into the beach and then try to suck you into the deep. I saw it as a challenge. It became my goal to stand against the crashing waves without being knocked down. I would dig in, turn sideways and put my shoulder into it with the hopes of being victorious.

As I have grown older I have found that game repeated many times in life. If you wade out far enough, you will find that life can get rough.

I have also found that ministry can get rough as well. Waves of discouragement come. Waves of relational difficulties come. Waves of financial difficulties come. Waves of Apathy swirl around our feet and threaten to sweep us off shore. There are waves of temptation tower over us threatening to wear us down until we give in. Waves of sickness, death and loss pound seek to pound us into submission.

As a church, waves of discontent, disunity, loss of purpose seek to push us backward and keep us from becoming a church of great impact. A church that spreads the fame our Lord and reaches people with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Today I want us to continue to look in and around chapters 2 and 3 of 1 Thessalonians. For some reason I have not been able to pull away from these chapters; chapters that show the heart, desire, passion and purpose of a pastor and also a church.
