1 Thessalonians 5:17-28
I like doing things right. I believe in excellence and most of the time I strive for excellence in the things I do. I want the best for my family and my church and do the best I can for them. I have a problem. I know, you're thinking just one. I'm not an innovator or a problem solver and don't always see or know the best steps to take to reach the level of excellence and dreams I am striving for. I'm one of those people who need short, simple and sensible steps. Don't ask me to read between the lines. Tell me what needs to get done and how to do it. This is step 1, 2 and 3.
Paul, as he closes out this letter to a young and growing church, knows despite this church's success and influence it is filled with young Christians who are no older in the faith than the church itself. At the point of the writing of this letter, were probably no more than a few months old in the Christian faith.
As Paul ends this letter, he rounds it out with some short, simple and powerful reminders of how they are to relate to one another in the church and how to live out their faith more effectively. He shares with them what God wants and expects from them. We have already seen that we are to: Rejoice at all times and give thanks in all things.
Tonight as we finish up this letter and look at the rest of these short and to the point imperatives we will discover how to have a Christ-like excellence in our lives. Not only do we need to rejoice always and give thanks in all things but:
Pray at all times
This statement seems almost as unrealistic and impossible as the one before it, rejoice always.
We all know, say and somewhat believe that prayer is important and changes things but the truth is many of us have trouble remembering to say grace before we put on the feed bag and find it challenging, to say the least, to have a disciplined time of praye ...
