This is the season of love, and we are beginning a brand new sermon series titled, ''Love So Strong.'' Every February we celebrate Valentine's day on February 14th. And tonight is the Super Bowl for those that LOVE FOOTBALL! I wish some of those people that go to other churches (not ours of course) would get half as excited about the VICTORY we have in Jesus than for some weird shaped piece of leather making its way over a painted line on the field or going through 2 goal posts!
Honestly, our heart is that ALL OF YOU would be so OVERWHELMED WITH THE LOVE OF JESUS that you can't help but get excited about it. That's the word that God showed me for you. He wants to OVERWHELM you with His love. When you talk about the word ''overwhelm'' it usually has a negative connotation. ''I am overwhelmed with debt.'' ''I am overwhelmed with fear, with worry.'' ''I am overwhelmed with my work load.'' ''I am overwhelmed with resentment over what happened.''
The dictionary defines ''overwhelm'' as follows: to cover over completely, to submerge. In other words, you're in over your head. You're underneath. If that's you today, God doesn't want you to be overwhelmed with the things of this world. He loves you and He wants you to be so overtaken by His love, that it affects every other area of your life. Not only does God want to overwhelm you with His love, He wants you to know that with Him nothing can overwhelm you.
Isaiah 43:1 But now thus says the LORD, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: ''Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. 2 When you pass through the waters I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. (RSV)
