When God Fights for His People
Richard A. Bradley
Joshua 10:12-15
Joshua 10:12-15
12 Then Joshua spoke to the Lord in the day when the Lord delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel:
''Sun, stand still over Gibeon;
And Moon, in the Valley of Aijalon.''
13 So the sun stood still,
And the moon stopped,
Till the people had revenge
Upon their enemies.
Is this not written in the Book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and did not hasten to go down for about a whole day.
14 And there has been no day like that, before it or after it, that the Lord heeded the voice of a man; for the Lord fought for Israel.
15 Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.
You may remember the story of Gibeon. When Israel invaded the Promised Land it was very clear that God was on their side. The Jews had been warned by God to not make any treaties with those who were living in the land. Everyone was to be driven out. However, the city state of Gibeon did a smart thing. They told Joshua that they lived far away from Israel and wanted to make a treaty with Israel which Joshua gladly did.
All went well until a coalition of Canaanite kings went to war against Gibeon because of this treaty. Joshua and his army came to the rescue of their new ally and this incredible Scripture passage is the result. In this passage we find Joshua's summary of what took place on that Day of Days.
