1 Thessalonians 5:14-18

14 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all. 15 See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all. 16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

Thanksgiving has come and gone for another year and that makes me a little sad because it's all about two of my favorite things: food and family; not necessarily in that order. We trace our celebration of Thanksgiving back to the 1621 Plymouth pilgrims who asked the colonists to join together for a time of fasting and feasting to celebrate a great harvest. How would you feel if you were told you couldn't feast until you had fasted? That would make everything taste just a little bit better wouldn't it?

It's good to be thankful on the fourth Thursday of November each year but it's even better to live a life of thanksgiving. This morning take a look at what kind of life a life of thanksgiving would be.

A LIFE OF THANKSGIVING IS A LIFE OF REJOICING

16 Rejoice always,

To rejoice is to be happy. Someone might ask, ''What have I got to be happy about?'' We could all be a little more happy then we are and maybe life hasn't worked out for us like we wanted but any of us could be worse off than we are.

Paul mentioned a select group of individuals in verses 14 and 15. Think you haven't anything to be thankful for this morning? You could be living an unruly life or be fainthearted or weak or someone that lacks patience. You could be a vengeful person or even a evil person.

See what I mean? Why not be thankful this morning that God has helped you to become a better person than the one described here?
