Introduction.

I hope you remember that last week as we entered into 2017, I said that the best way for us to face this New Year is to remember that we must LOOK FORWARD and we need to keep our eyes on Christ...that translates to:

listening to Him,

both in prayer and as we read our Bibles;

it means talking with Him in prayer,

and it also means our obeying Him. Jesus is the KEY.

So ok...back to the best way to face 2017...

if looking forward and keeping our eyes on Jesus is in fact what we're really serious about doing in 2017, then I felt it would help us by sharing with you more about this 'being IN Christ' thing that we talk about...

It's for that reason then, that I felt led to start a new preaching-teaching series based on, ''IN CHRIST.'' So for the next weeks, actually the next several months, I'll be doing an expositional series through 1 John.

All that said, let's start off today with an introduction to this book, 1 John.

The Author of 1 John is widely accepted among solid Biblical scholars, and by the way it was also accepted by the early church fathers, as being indeed the Apostle, John.

A quick look at your Bible shows that there are actually 3 of these letters, or epistles.

And again, these three letters, 1, 2, and 3d John.

Plus this is the same John who also wrote the 4th Gospel and, is the same John, again whom the not only the early Church Fathers, but also most good scholars recognize as being the one who wrote Revelation.

Based upon when this epistle, 1 John, was written, it is believed to have been written by the Apostle when he was a much older man...with most datings placing the writing somewhere in the time frame of 80 - 90 A.D. John was born around 6 A.D. and died around 101 A.D. according to church history. And he was exiled to the Isle of Patmos around 95 A.D. and released about 18 months or so later.
