Lack of Holiness (4 of 7)
Series: 1 John
Dr. Jerry Branch
1 John 1:5
The major spoiler that keeps us from enjoying fellowship and fullness...It's called, lack of holiness
1 John 1:5
5 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
We've been going through the initial verses of chapter 1 of the Letter, 1 John.
Today we come to verse 5, and once again, we must not go about reading verse 5 outside the context with the whole letter, we cannot just go pulling sound bites out of this verse or any other for that matter...
With that, let me read from 1 John 1:5 through chapter 2:1
1 John 1:5-2:1 (ESV) 5 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. 1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
While reading this verse in context with the whole letter, I noticed...and once again, and this is key...
Once again, we find John writing to his readers and hearers and is telling them WHY they might find their fellowship with God to sometimes be lacking...or to sometimes NOT be as good as God intended.
If you will, again remember to whom is John writing this letter...
He is writing and speaking to the believers...the Christians...to the church.
John is NOT mak ...
