Psalm 24:1

One of the lessons we learn growing up is to respect other people. Part of learning to respect others is learning to respect their property and possessions. Growing up that was yet one more lesson on a very long list of lessons I struggled to learn - much to my family and especially my brother's chagrin.

My brother took good care of his stuff. Most of it was in mint condition. Some of his favorites were these guys (PowerPoint). How many of you remember these 1960s and 1970s G.I. Joes? They were so cool. Their arms, feet, head and hands all moved. They even had fuzz for hair and then some of them had they wicked scar on their face. They looked tough. They were a boy's toy.

Like all his other toys, he took really good care of them. I still question whether he ever played with them. But then I came along - a day he has ever forgiven mom and dad for - and mom let me play with them. She did not let me have them but I could play with them. They were not mine. I didn't own them. Because I did not know what it meant to be a steward I ruined and destroyed what was on loan and never mine to begin with.

Many of us have made the same mistake with our lives and with God. We've made a mess out of our lives and have wasted opportunities that we can never get back because we failed to be good stewards of the one life God has given us...a life on loan.
