1) Hope you had a great Thanksgiving
a) How many of you ventured out into Black Friday?
b) We are entering into shopping season
i) Ever noticed how when you are shopping for something specific you start noticing it everywhere?
ii) Someone asks you to get them something you've never heard of and you suddenly realize it's all over the place
c) This phenomenon has different names but is commonly referred to as ''The Frequency Illusion''
i) It's not that you are seeing something more, you are noticing it more
ii) This often happens when you are car shopping
d) Said differently, your brain was filtering it out before, and now it stopped filtering it
e) God wired our brains to screen out the things we think are unimportant (which is a blessing in itself)
i) Which is why you can't remember your friend's Starbucks drink
ii) But you do want to remember your anniversary
iii) But once we decide something matters, our brain works with us to reveal it more fully

2) I'd like to suggest that hope in Jesus is a lot like that
a) It's all around us as believers
b) But most of the time we filter it out
c) It doesn't sound as loud as the other details around us
d) Where would you find hope if you stopped filtering it out?

3) We are finishing a series called Hope in Hard Times
a) Going through the book of 1 Peter
i) Peter addresses the early church's confusion over why they were experiencing suffering
ii) If we follow Jesus, shouldn't everything work out?
iii) Peter teaches us the spiritual role suffering plays in our life as a Christian
b) Journals week 3
i) Today's title is A Hope Revealed
ii) Big idea: True hope cannot be contained.
(1) Think of trying to contain things without success
(a) Maybe it's bath time with your kids (containing the bubbles, or containing the kids)
(b) Or keeping a surprise from someone when you tend to talk too much
