Luke 2:1 And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. 2 This census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria. 3 So all went to be registered, everyone to his own city. 4 Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, 5 to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child. 6 So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. 7 And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

Let's stop there for a moment. Caesar Augustus made a law that everyone had to go to their hometown to be registered for the census they were taking. Joseph who was already engaged to Mary had to go to Bethlehem to be registered. And this is what fulfilled the scriptures that out of Bethlehem would come a Ruler in Israel.

Micah 5:2 ''But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Though you are little among the thousands of Judah, Yet out of you shall come forth to Me The One to be Ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth are from of old, From everlasting.''

God knew exactly what He was doing in allowing there to be a census that needed to be taken right before Mary was to have Jesus. Even though they would have to travel for three days on the back of a donkey while being 9 months pregnant, even though there were inconveniences like no vacancy at the local Hampton Inn, even though their newborn baby had to be placed in a feeding trough and wrapped in whatever cloths they could find, they were right smack dab in the middle of God's will. Even though the prophecy comes in a glorious package, the fulfillment of such prophecy usually comes to pass with much trouble and conflic ...
