1) Merry Christmas!

2) Not everyone loves this time of year
a) Some may argue we have reason to be skeptical

b) We are in week 3 of our series about the stories of Christmas
c) Today we are going to look at someone who takes this conflict to a new level
i) Every story has a villain
ii) At Christmas we think of the Grinch and Scrooge [pics side by side]
iii) Yet they have nothing on today's story

i) Big idea: You will either fight against this story or submit your life to it.
ii) Open your Bibles to Matthew 2
3) Herod's rule
a) Herod received a governorship in Galilee at age 25
i) He would rule for the next 33 years
(1) The Romans had high hopes that Herod would keep the Jews in line
(2) The Roman Senate gave Herod the title ''King of the Jews'' (after he asked for it)
ii) Herod married 10 women and fathered 15 children by them.
iii) Picture: Herod's Family Tree

(2) Today we are only talking about Herod the Great
4) Matthew 2:1-3 ''After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem 2 and asked, ''Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.'' 3 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.''
a) Why is Herod disturbed?
i) Herod is suffering from some of the conditions that will eventually cause his death
(1) He suffered from convulsions
(2) He skin was covered in open sores
(3) He was rapidly losing his mind
(4) Kind of like...
