Every Christian needs to have a local gospel
church home. I talk to people almost every day who
say, "I'm a Christian, but I don't have a local church
home." Sometimes I say to them, "Well, would you
prayerfully consider making First Baptist Church your
home?" Sometimes they answer me, "We're not too sure
that we are going to be staying here." I always ask,
"How long have you been here?" "Twenty years."
"Thirty years." Or something like that. If you moved
your furniture and if you brought your car down here
it would be very good for you to bring your church
membership and have a local membership in a gospel
preaching church. That is very important. You need a
local church.

I heard about a lady who went to the doctor. She
said, "Doc, you have to help me. My husband thinks
he's a chicken." He said, "Oh, that's bad, we are
going to have to send him off." She said, "Oh, you
can't do that." He said, "Why not?" She said, "We
need the eggs."

You need a church. You need to have a local
Bible-preaching, Bible-believing church. The church
of Thessalonica is one of the great churches of the
New Testament. I think it was a favorite of Paul. I
go back and forth in my own mind whether this is the
church or whether the church at Philippi was Paul's
favorite church. But it has to be one of the great
churches of the New Testament. It has to be a
marvelous model for us. It was a church born in
revival. It was a church which had a reputation for
its vibrant witness for the Lord. In fact in the
first chapter, eighth verse Paul says about them,
"Your faith to god ward is spoken abroad." People
had heard about that church. It was one of the great
gospel, Bible-preaching churches of the New Testament
day.
