Nehemiah 5:1-19
I want to welcome everybody who's worshiping with us today. We're taking six weeks to walk through the book of Nehemiah, which is about a group of people who joined together to build something bigger than themselves. It was about 450BC, and that was a rough time for the Jewish people because they were under the rule of the Persian Empire. And the city of Jerusalem had been basically destroyed. So Nehemiah, this Jewish man who was living in Persia, left his comfortable government job, and he came to Jerusalem to lead a rebuilding project.
And any time you're trying to accomplish something significant, there will be opposition. So in chapter four, we saw some Persian government officials who were threatened when they saw the Jerusalem wall being rebuilt, so they started with mocking, and then it turned into threats. And Nehemiah-as the leader-showed this brilliant combination of turning to God in prayer, and then taking strong action. Prayer and action. And the people responded, and the work went on.
So that brings us to chapter five. And chapter five is no longer talking about threats from outside the walls; it's talking about something just as dangerous on the inside.
I've said this every week of this series: my hope is that, through the book of Nehemiah, all of us will realize that we were meant to be part of building something bigger than just self-improvement. To be part of something that brings blessing and good into the lives of people. It's what we were made for. But here's the thing: if we rise to that calling, our efforts will not amount to anything unless we have the thing we're going to talk about today...which is internal health.
So...let's read the passage-Nehemiah chapter five, starting in verse 1...
1 Now the men and their wives raised a great outcry against their fellow Jews. 2 Some were saying, ''We and our sons and daughters are numerous; in order for us to eat ...
