Nehemiah 8:1-18


I want to greet everyone at our Lincoln Park Campus and at our Acoustic Service, as well as those who are watching on our web site or listening to our Podcast-great to have you with us today.

So...today we're finishing a six-week study of the book of Nehemiah, which is the historical account of a group of people who gathered together to build something bigger than themselves. Back in 586BC, Jerusalem had been conquered and the city wall was destroyed-which, at that time, if you didn't have a wall, you weren't a real city. It was shameful. So finally, about 140 years later, somebody stepped up and did something about it. Nehemiah-who was living in Persia at the time-left his comfortable job with the Persian government, traveled to Jerusalem, rallied the people, and led the effort to rebuild the broken-down wall. And just like with any great project, he dealt with all kinds of problems...but he kept the project going.

So here's the reason we chose to study Nehemiah: when you and I go after things in life-when we have resolutions or goals or whatever you want to call them-it's so easy to limit ourselves to self-improvement. Right? And there's nothing wrong with self-improvement, but if those are the highest goals we have, we're settling for less than God has designed us for. Because we were made to give the best of who we are to things that bring blessing and good into the lives of other people. And it's been awesome to hear some of your stories of how God has been using this series to make you uncomfortable and restless, and how you're taking risks and following His call.

So...let's pick up the story in Nehemiah 6, verse 15: So the wall was completed on the twenty-fifth of Elul (that's a month on the Jewish calendar; but here's the important part...), in fifty-two days. That was a stunning accomplishment. I don't know how long Nehemiah expected it to take, but I don't think anyon ...
