Daniel 1:17-20
1) Welcome to Central
a) Hello to all our campuses
b) When's the last time you felt helpless?

2) Chapter 18 of The Story is loaded

c) Title: Daniel in Exile
d) Big Idea: God does some of His best work when we feel helpless.
3) Remember that the lower kingdom of Judah has been deported to Babylon
a) This had already happened to the Northern Kingdom of Israel by the Assyrians
i) Picture - Israel/Judah [used last week]
ii) Now, the remaining parts of the former nation of Israel are taken to Babylon
iii) Picture - Israelite Movement
b) This was the best and brightest of Judah
i) We find four of these exiled Israelites stand out in particular
ii) Daniel 1:17 ''To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding of all kinds of literature and learning. And Daniel could understand visions and dreams of all kinds.''
iii) Daniel 1:20 ''In every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king questioned them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his whole kingdom.''
iv) Here's what this reminds us: just because you feel helpless does not mean God has abandoned you
v) We saw this same thing with the life of Joseph
vi) These guys are probably 14-16 when this happens
c) Currently Babylon is the major power, it will then become the Persians (within Daniel's lifetime), followed by Alexander the Great and the Greeks, and then the Romans
d) God does some of His best work when we feel helpless.
4) Daniel 2:1-13 ''In the second year of his reign, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams; his mind was troubled and he could not sleep. 2 So the king summoned the magicians, enchanters, sorcerers and astrologers to tell him what he had dreamed.
