2) The Inter-Testamental Silence

a) When we left the OT we were at a low point

i) We've endured the period where the kingdom split into two

ii) We've gone through the captivity in Babylon

iii) They've returned from the captivity
(1) They finally got the temple rebuilt
(2) They get the wall around Jerusalem rebuilt

iv) The last prophet of the Old Testament was Malachi
(1) The last words of Malachi were directed toward the coming of the Messiah.
(2) Before the Messiah would appear, there would come a prophet who would remind them of Elijah
(3) This prophet would pave the way for the coming of the Christ.
(4) In hindsight, we now understand this to be John the Baptist.
(a) But we know this from a perspective they didn't have.
(b) They just had to anticipate his coming.
(5) What Malachi didn't do, though, was give a ''due date'' for his arrival

v) So then came a time of waiting... of anticipating

b) 400 years of waiting, to be specific

i) Silence
(1) No burning bushes
(2) No parting seas
(3) No visions
(4) No dreams
(5) No prophecies
(6) No angelic visits

ii) Silence, just silence
